Guamà, cero de mortalidad infantil.

Chivirico.

Chivirico, September 5th 2008. To reach zero infantile mortality in so
far this year in Guamá municipality, acquires a national relevance in
the Cuban health sector keeping in mind the difficult conditions in
which the medical and paramedic personnel of these mountains develop
their activities, if we compare them with those from other places
where the geography doesn't impose challenges that impede somehow this
human task.
Maritza Rivaflechas Castellanos who is the person in charge of the
Health Sector in Guamá, manifested that they have carried out periodic
checkups in the Infantile Maternal Program (IMP), where they have
evaluated which the negative factors could be that avoid ending this
year with Zero Infantile Mortality.
At the moment there are 132 women that should give birth during the
next three months. These pregnant women have been evaluated by
multidisciplinary medical staff and have been diagnosed in a precise
way about the health situation of each one of them for better
guarantee of the woman's and her baby's life.
Maritza emphasized that one of the strategies of the Infantile
Maternal Program is the decrease of the low weight when being born,
sign that exhibits an adequate situation because they make sure the
nutritional modules in every Popular Council. In Uvero and Bahía Larga
nutritional houses have been created where the pregnant women, whose
conditions propitiate the low weight during pregnancy, as well as
those that have anemia or other pathologies that impede them to put on
weight.
She also revealed that they have achieved positive impacts in the
program, with the result that four women with multiple pregnancies
(twins), have given birth children with averages of appropriate weight
as part of the actions of health that have been taken in this sense.
And, even when many women keep reluctant postures to be admitted in
Maternal Homes, these homes have allowed in a preventive way to
correct a lot of nutritional problems and illness during this stage
which is vital for their baby's development.
The zero infantile mortality in Guamá Mountains during this year is an
extraordinary achievement if we keep in mind that in the Sierra
Maestra's homes, before the victory of the revolution for each
thousand born alive more than 16 children used to die, and in the
geographical circumstances in that our physicians and nurses have to
work, this demonstrates to the world that in the farthest Cuban
places, the state also assures the human being lives until taking it
to figures comparable with those of developed countries.
